Discoveries

Discovering New York State and more about Rochester and the surrounding area is staring to spark my interest. I had a great day this week going to Oswego NY with a tour arranged by the Fiends of Susan B. Anthony House.

• Of particular interest was leaning how the “underground” railroad functioned in Oswego. http://www.oswegocounty.com/info/news/100606-3.html. Sparks my interestd to learn more about it in Rochester and surrounding areas. The boldness and creativity if amazing.
• Fascinating was learning about Safe Haven http://www.oswegohaven.org/ where in 1944 during WWII nearly 1,000 evacuees, people being persecuted by the Nazis, were welcomed to Oswego, New York, to the Fort Ontario Refugee Center. The townspeople and the community worked with the refugees over the 18 months to welcome them and help them adjust. To be allowed to come they had to sign papers saying they would go back to their countries in Europe…but after the war how could they? Their time here and how they got to stay is a fascinating story.
